Status: The silent force guiding your choices

How you can position your offer

I was part of a marketing team at an education company, where our mission was to empower individuals with the skills to become effective leaders. When we launched a new program, our landing page showcased everything about the program - what students would learn, the course materials, and all the benefits. But surprisingly, not many people were signing up.

A few weeks after launch, we realized we needed a change. We completely shifted the message of the landing page. Instead of listing all the features of the course, we started showing how our program could transform students’lives. We talked about how it could help them get better jobs, earn more money, and proudly share their accomplishment on LinkedIn.

The result? More people signed up than ever before.

This taught me something important: when people buy something, they’re often driven by their emotions. It’s really crucial to show them how your opportunity can boost their status.

The status here is not how others perceive you, but rather how you perceive yourself.

Nearly every decision in your life is linked to your desire for status, whether you know it or not. Think about it: the school you went to, the people you dated, married, or parted ways with, even the books you read and the car you drive, or don’t drive - they’re all influenced by our drive for status.

Nearly all your choices have been guided by this subconscious question:

“ Is this decision I’m about to make going to increase my status or decrease it?”

(Keep this in mind next time you present your offer to someone)

Here are some examples of factors that elevate status:

  • Anything that makes them look smarter

  • Anything that shows wealth

  • Appearances (clothing, makeup, physiques, …)

  • Online presence, having a large following

  • iPhone vs. Android phone 😂

(fun fact: I’m an Android user too 😬)

You know, I thought I wasn't affected by this status thing since I like to wear reasonable clothes and drive a reasonable car. I don’t like to flex, I like the idea of quiet rich. But the truth is I’m afraid that my family, friends, and even neighbors would judge me if I live too lavishly (and that affects my status).

Love it or hate it, we are slaves to what we believe others will think about us.

Alright, that’s it for this one.

See ya next week!
